Saturn . How to Time a Honda Accord Engine

The Honda Accord is considered to be one of the most reliable cars in the world. You can often see Honda Accords with more than 200,000 miles going strong on the road. One of the reasons for the Accord's durability is its praised VTEC engine. You can take care of the VTEC engine by adjusting the ignition time to its factory recommended setting. The factory recommended ignition time for the Honda Accord has varied from year to year but the range has been from 12 to 18 degrees before top dead center (BTDC). You should not go over 18 degrees or under 12 degrees when adjusting the ignition time or you may cause damage to the VTEC engine.
Difficulty:Moderately Challenging
Instructions Things You'll Need
Timing light
Wrench
Wheel chocks

Step by Step :
1
Turn your Honda Accord on. You should turn all accessories off, including the car's radio, air conditioning and heat.
2
Use the wheel chocks to chock the wheels on your car. Put your Accord's transmission in neutral and firmly engage the emergency brake before bringing the engine the an idle speed of 750 rpm.
3
Exit the Honda Accord and open the hood so you can access the engine.
4
Connect the red clip of the timing light to the battery's positive terminal and connect the black clip of the timing light to the battery's negative terminal. You can now connect the timing light the to the main crankshaft pulley and the number one spark plug.
5
Check the timing mark on the pulley to see what the current ignition timing is. You can leave the ignition time the way it is and return your car back to its normal state if you no longer want to adjust the time.
6
Locate the distributor lock-down bolt. It should be at the base of the distributor housing. Loosen the lock-down bolt with your wrench once you have found it and disconnect the distributor vacuum hose from the distributor housing. You will now be able to adjust the ignition time.
7
Use your hand to rotate the distributor until the timing mark on the pulley falls to the time you want. 12 to 18 degrees is recommended.
8
Connect the distributor hose back into the distributor housing and tighten the lock-down bolt. Remove the timing light from the different parts of the engine, close the hood of your car, and remove the wheel chocks.

Saturn . How to Set the Timing on a 1989 Honda Accord

The 1989 Honda Accord distributor is driven by the end camshaft on the back side of the cylinder head. Over time the timing belt that connects the crankshaft and the camshaft will stretch and cause minor changes in the ignition timing that can rob the engine of power and fuel mileage. Set the timing in this car when performing a tune up to compensate for these small changes in ignition timing and restore lost power and fuel economy.
Difficulty:Moderate
Instructions Things You'll Need
Timing light
Paper clip
12mm wrench

Step by Step :
1
Start the engine and warm it up until the cooling fans come on to indicate it has reached operating temperature. Setting the timing before the engine has reached operating temperature will result in an error caused by the higher idle speed that the engine runs at when it is cold.
2
Turn the engine off. Attach the timing light power cables to the battery located in the front of the engine compartment on the passenger side of the 1989 Honda Accord. Clip the timing light's spark plug wire pickup around the spark plug wire closest to the driver side of the engine.
3
Short the timing connector min the Honda's engine compartment by pushing the ends of an unfolded paper clip into the two terminals in the connector. The timing connector in the 1989 Honda Accord is located on the main wiring harness that runs along the driver side of the engine compartment and is identified as a two wire connector with a yellow cover over it.
4
Start engine. Wait for the cooling fans to stop running and aim the timing light at the timing pointer on the plastic timing cover on the front of the engine. Observe timing timing marks on the crankshaft pulley located below the timing pointer.
5
Loosen two 12mm nuts that secure the distributor to the passenger side of the cylinder head. Rotate the distributor to set the timing to 18degrees +/- 2 BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) and retighten the distributor nuts. On the 1989 Honda Accord, 18 degrees is the middle mark (painted red) of the three marks on the crankshaft pulley. The 18 degree mark should be centered in the timing pointer.
6
Turn off engine and remove the paper clip from the timing connector and unclip the timing light from the battery and spark plug wire. Test drive the Honda to verify the engine runs properly.
Tips & Warnings
Wear safety glasses and work gloves when working around a running engine to prevent serious injuries.

With the engine off, check to see whether the cables that run from the distributor cap to the spark plugs are pushed down securely at each end. Check the cable that runs from the distributor cap to the coil to be sure that it, too, is secure. How about the smaller wires that come out of the coil? Because many cars now have high-energy ignition systems that operate at 47,000 volts or higher, pulling a distributor or spark plug cable to test for a spark is unsafe. If your car has an electronic ignition system, the ignition module may have gone bad. If you have an electronic ignition system or a distributorless ignition system, skip the rest of the checks in this section. If your car has a non-electronic ignition system, follow the instructions in Chapter 12 to remove the distributor cap and look at the points. Do they open and close when you bump the starter? If not, adjust them so that they do and try to start the car again. If there's still no action, your points could be oxidized or fouled by a bit of grease or oil. Bump the engine so that the points are closed, and insert the tip of a screwdriver, nail file, matchbook cover, or feeler gauge between them to rub the point surfaces and eliminate the oxidation or dirt. If you still can't get the engine to turn over, move on to the next section. Replacing the rotor, condenser, and points If you've kept your old rotor, points, and condenser in the trunk of your car because they were still working when you replaced them during a tune-up, you can use these parts to try to find and correct your problem. First, following instructions in Chapter 12, try replacing the rotor with the old one. If that doesn't work, replace the condenser. If that doesn't work, replace the points. Don't worry about adjusting the point gap; as long as the points open and close, the engine will run. Part IV: Dealing with On-the-Road Emergencies. I've been told that the most frequent cause of engine failure on vehicles with old-style, non-electronic distributors is improper lubrication of the cam when the points were changed. Because of this, the little rubbing block gets worn down, and then, even when the block rests on the cam lobe, there's not enough surface to force the points apart. That's why, if you have a nonelectronic ignition system, it's important to check your dwell every 5,000 miles and replace points at every tune-up (see Chapter 12 for instructions). If you've checked everything out and your vehicle still won't go, you're probably going to have to wait for help. Sometimes part of your engine has given out. Sometimes it's the transmission. If that's the case, you may be saying good-bye to Old Faithful. On the bright side, you usually have plenty of warning before a car gives up the ghost. Of course, if you haven't checked and maintained your vehicle properly — if you've ignored the warnings, the knockings, the smoke from the tailpipe, the hesitations and the other symptoms I cover in Chapter 20 — well, you asked for it. Even the happiest, most beautifully tuned vehicle overheats occasionally. If you find yourself in stop-and-go traffic on an extremely hot day, chances are that your car's dashboard temperature indicator will rise or a warning light will come on. Here's how to help your vehicle regain its cool: At the first sign of overheating, shut off your air conditioner and open your windows. Doing so decreases the load on the engine and helps it cool off. If you continue to overheat, turn on the heater and blower. Doing so transfers the heat from the engine to the interior of the car. (This does wonders for your overheated engine but very little for you!) If you're stopped hi traffic and the temperature gauge is rising, shift into Neutral and rev the engine a little. Doing so makes the water pump and the fan speed up, which draws more liquid and air through the radiator. The increased air and liquid circulation helps cool things off. Try not to ride your brakes. Crawl along slowly, on little more than an idle, rather than moving up and then braking repeatedly. Brake drag increases the load on the engine and makes it heat up. If traffic is crawling, move up only when the gap between you and the vehicle in front of you gets too wide. .Chapter 21: What to Do If Your Car Drops Dead or Won't Start AAJ * If you think that your vehicle is about to boil over, drive to the side of the road, open the hood, and sit there until things cool off. Remember, don't open the radiator cap under these circumstances, and if your engine has boiled over, don't add water until the engine is quite cool again. If you must add water when the engine is still a little warm, add the water while the engine is running in Neutral. Follow the instructions at the beginning of this chapter to park where you can safely get out and open your hood. Then, to avoid the possibility of burning yourself, follow the instructions in Chapter 14 for opening a radiator pressure cap and adding liquid to the system safely. Sometimes very hot weather causes vapor lock, which makes your car stop

without warning and refuse to go again. You can find the simple remedy for this problem in the "Fuel" section, earlier in this chapter. Overheating When It Isn't Hot Outside Although hot weather is the most common cause of overheating, many other factors can cause the same problem. If your vehicle overheats in traffic in normal weather, one of the following may be the culprit: * The water and coolant level in the radiator is low. If you haven't checked your fluid level in a while (or ever), check it now, either by looking at the level through the side of the coolant recovery system or by following the instructions in "Check the Radiator" in Chapter 3. * There's a leak in the cooling system. Chapter 14 has an entire section that explains where to look for leaks in various parts of the cooling system and what to do after you find them.

Saturn . Who is responsible when a car backing out of driveway collides with car pulling away from curb?

* If you can't locate any leaks, your thermostat may be malfunctioning. Obviously, you can't replace the thermostat at the side of the road, but Chapter 14 has instructions for doing so cheaply and easily once you're safely back home. In the meantime, you can eliminate this malfunction as a possibility if you wait until the engine cools down completely and use those instructions to remove the old thermostat and reconnect the hoses. If the car starts up and runs well without the thermostat, the old one was probably screwing up the works. Get a new thermostat immediately if you find that your old one isn't working. If you drive for long distances without a thermostat, you can damage your engine. * If none of these seems to be the problem and your vehicle continues to overheat, check out "Overcoming Overheating" in Chapter 14. Part IV: Dealing with On-the-Road Emergencies. If \lour Car Won't Start Before I end this chapter, consider those wonderful days when your car won't start. If you left your lights, heater, radio, or some other electrical gizmo on after you parked the car, you know what the trouble is: Your battery is dead. Of course, there are other possible reasons that your car won't start. The next section, "Won't-start symptoms," lists them. The last section, "Jumping a start," explains the safest way to jump-start your vehicle. Won't-start symptoms

Your car may not start for a number of reasons. The following list outlines the most common circumstances and tells you what action you can take to try to remedy each situation: * The car is silent when you turn the key in the ignition. Check the battery terminal cable connections (see Chapter 3). If they look very corroded, force the point of a screwdriver (with an insulated or wooden handle) between the connector and the terminal post and twist it to lodge it firmly. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, you need to clean or replace your cables. You can find instructions for cleaning them in Chapter 3. The car makes a clicking noise but won't start. This sound usually means a dead battery. If not, check the wiring to and from the starter for a loose connection. * The car cranks over but won't start. Check the fuel supply to your engine (see "Fuel" earlier in this chapter, and Chapter 13). If that's okay, check whether the electrical spark is getting through (see "Fire," earlier in this chapter, and Chapter 12). * The engine starts but dies. If your car has a carburetor, check your carburetor adjustment and your choke to see whether the choke is first closing and then opening. (Chapter 13 has instructions for both of these checks.) If you have fuel injection, you'll need professional help.
